I am sure you are familiar with this quotation attributed to Peter Drucker the famous management consultant. This statement reminds us that unless the culture of your organisation is ready for change then your strategy, however good it is, will fail. In these troubled times of COVID-19 I would ask the question “Has Innovation eaten Strategy for lunch?”.

A Strategic Plan is typically a document that defines the direction of your organisation and covers a 1-3-year period. Plans are great when times are normal and you can predict most external factors but it is highly likely that the lockdown situation has significantly disrupted your strategic plans and unless you are a clairvoyant your strategic plan did not anticipate such a level of disruption to your business operations. As your teams are dispersed, or even furloughed  staff, organisations have paused many strategic projects while they get their heads around trying what they can do as an organisation to survive and how they can provide a workable operating environment that can be managed by a dispersed team.

Your organisations mission statement and underlying business purpose probably remain the same as they were when you developed your Strategic Plan but how can you develop a new strategic plan when the rules of engagement are now so vague and undefined? How can you live with the ambiguity the world has thrust upon your organisation? This is not an easy question to consider with the biggest concern on your mind probably being survival. The key to surviving will be flexibility, agility and innovation., 


The term ‘Agile’ as a set of values and principles has been a popular way to quickly develop products while minimising waste. Agility can be defined as continually adapting and making improvements to the way you work. Does this sound familiar to your new operating world as a result of the Lockdown we are currently living through?  How can you develop a robust agile set of business processes using minimal technology without investing an arm and a leg in an expensive large-scale computer system? All these things are highly likely to be part of your Microsoft 365 subscription, work on virtually any device including all mobile phones and are probably not being used by your organisation to anywhere near their potential.

The world is highly unlikely to return to the way it was anytime soon. Now is the time to innovate, be agile and review your business processes to survive. If your staff are furloughed they can still undertake training programmes helping to ensure they are better prepared once they return to work.
